A Particular Kind of Attention
This week, I have been sitting with Part III of the book, guided by a clear assignment from my editor. The book unfolds across three parts, and this final movement has its own work to do: to stand on its own while completing what the first two parts began. So I am staying with it a little longer, listening for what the pages are asking to become.
Writing makes you a student twice over: of the book as it develops and of the editor who helps you see the work from another vantage point. Sometimes an editor can name what the book is asking before the writer has found language for it. The assignment then becomes its own form of attention, an invitation to look again and see more.
Attention can be generative in this way. It helps us see what is already present and gives shape to what might become possible. That is where I am this Sunday, staying close enough to discover what this attention makes possible. Perhaps there is something in your week asking for the same.
